NDIS mid-term audit

NDIS Mid-term Audit

The NDIS mid-term audit is an excellent opportunity to check how your business is going and if any improvements can be considered.

Registered NDIS providers must undertake an NDIS mid-term audit within 18 months from the registration date, as shown on the registration certificate.

The mid-term audit is an onsite assessment to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of the provider’s system to meet the requirements of the functional modules of the NDIS Practice standards.

This article discusses NDIS Mid-term audits and the difference between different audits. We also suggest how you can choose a perfect auditor.

About the NDIS Mid-term audits

A mid-term audit is required when the provider is a partnership only with a certification registration group for early intervention supports for early childhood or the only registration group is specialist disability accommodation.

Mid-term audits must begin 18 months after beginning the period for which the provider’s registration is in force.

The scope of the mid-term audit will be proportionate to the size and scope of your services.

How is NDIS mid-term audit different from Verification audits and Cerification audits.

A mid-term audit

The audit’s general goal is to assess the effectiveness and execution of the NDIS provider’s systems.

The major goal of the midterm audit is to determine whether the provider has kept its management system up to date by meeting application criteria.

Verification audits

For sole proprietors or smaller organisations providing low-risk support to NDIS members, a “verification” audit is necessary. These audits must be done every three years.

Auditors examine the documentation demonstrating how you fit into the NDIS practice standards verification module.

Policies and procedures, supporting papers such as registers and report templates, and copies of staff qualifications and criminal history checks are examples of documentary proof.

Cerification audits

Certification audits are more intensive than Verification audits and include a desktop documentation check and an onsite assessment.

The two main steps are usually as follows:

1. Document examination

Auditors examine your paperwork like that described for the verification audit.

Finally, any failures or areas of concern are reported so you can begin working on them before stage 2.

2. Onsite assessment:

Unlike the verification audit, NDIS providers providing high-risk support must conduct an onsite assessment, during which auditors will investigate the service delivery environment and any policy failings.

An audit of recertification

Every three years, the provider must undergo a Recertification audit. Not more than six months before the registration renewal date.

The initial Certification cycle lasts three years and begins on the date the registration is approved.

How do I choose an auditor?

There are now 16 organisations in Australia that have to be designated as NDIS Approved Auditing Bodies, which means that their auditing personnel can conduct NDIS audits (Verification or Certification).

Their contact information is available on the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission’s website.

Once you receive your Initial Scope of Audit, you can contact any of these 16 entities to learn how they will conduct your audit and how much they will charge.

You are responsible for selecting your auditor. While this can be intimidating, it is as simple as shopping around until you discover the auditing body with whom you would like to work.
